Quick summary — Vapes contain lithium-ion batteries that can cause fires when crushed in waste trucks. Never put them in household bins. Australia offers free recycling through B-cycle, council drop-offs, and state trial programs. This guide covers all your options.

🔞 Must be 21+ to purchase vaping products. This content is for adult consumers.

Why Vapes Need Special Recycling

Vapes contain a lithium-ion battery, plastic casing, circuit board, and traces of nicotine—a combination that makes them hazardous waste. According to Clean Up Australia, e-cigarettes create a "triple threat" of plastic waste, electronic waste, and hazardous waste.

Fire Risk: In the last 12 months, Queensland alone reported more than 200 battery-related fires. Vapes should never be disposed of in household waste or recycling bins.

National Recycling Options

B-cycle – Australia's Official Battery Recycling Scheme

B-cycle has over 4,000 drop-off locations nationwide—including Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, Bunnings, and JB Hi-Fi. B-cycle accepts loose batteries and devices where batteries can be easily removed by hand. Up to 95% of a battery's components can be turned into new batteries or used in other industries.

Tip: Visit bcycle.com.au/drop-off and enter your postcode to find the nearest B-cycle collection point. Most drop-offs are free for households.

Recycle Mate – Find Any Disposal Point

Recycle Mate is a free online tool that helps you find the right disposal point for any item, including vapes. Search by postcode, scan a barcode, or take a photo of your item. Endorsed by Sustainability Victoria and many councils.

Tip: Download the Recycle Mate app or visit recyclemate.com.au to locate vape disposal points near you.

Upcoming Policy Changes (2026-2027)

  • $50M National Battery Network: Proposed federal funding to establish a national battery collection network.
  • Producer Responsibility Regulation: Proposed rule to make brand owners fund safe collection and recycling for electronics and batteries.
  • Mandatory Battery Stewardship (NSW): First mandatory regulation; penalties up to $880,000. Commences 1 October 2026.

How to Dispose of Your Vape Correctly

  1. Remove the Battery (if possible): If your vape has a removable battery, take it out and drop it at a B-cycle bin. Never put batteries in household bins.
  2. Recycle the Pod: Some councils accept used pods at e-waste drop-offs. Check local options via Recycle Mate.
  3. Dispose of the Outer Casing: Once the battery and e-liquid/pod are removed, the plastic outer casing can go to general waste.
Important: Do not try to remove embedded batteries using tools. For sealed vapes, bring the entire device to a council waste facility or Community Recycling Centre.

What Happens After You Recycle?

When you drop a vape into a B-cycle bin, it is collected by a certified recycler. Batteries are shredded in an inert atmosphere to prevent fires, and components such as plastic, nickel, steel, and lithium are separated. Recovered materials can be used to manufacture new batteries, build metal tools, or produce fertiliser.

Since the import ban in January 2024, the Australian Border Force has seized over 17 million vapes, with disposal costs up to $13 per kilogram – highlighting the urgent need for robust recycling infrastructure.

Goulburn Mulwaree Council Trial (Until June 2026)

Goulburn Mulwaree Council in NSW initiated a free trial recycling service for soft plastics and vapes at the Goulburn Waste Management Centre in July 2025, running until 30 June 2026. Vapes should never be thrown into household or workplace bins due to fire hazard.
